MONTECHIARO
Like Strada del Castagno, Montechiaro is a transitional sector linking the first passage over Colle Pinzuto and Le Tolfe to the second, but at 3.3 km it is considerably longer and, above all, much closer to the finish, with just over 20 km remaining to Piazza del Campo.
It comes at a delicate phase of the race, when riders must try to save whatever energy they have left – as the road trends slightly downhill – ahead of the final two brutal sectors, while also avoiding any mechanical issues that at this point would be virtually impossible to recover from.
