MONTEAPERTI
After the chaos of Monte Sante Marie and 15 km on asphalt, the short but tricky Monteaperti sector – a location famous for the 1260 battle between Guelphs and Ghibellines – marks the beginning of the final explosive 50 km of racing.
The entire 600 metres rise uphill, with gradients up to 13%, and riders who are already on the limit after Monte Sante Marie risk paying a heavy price here, as by this point they will have nearly 150 km in their legs, while in the women’s race, despite not tackling Monte Sante Marie, Monteaperti still represents the ideal launchpad to start testing rivals and probing for weaknesses.
