This photo of the 2021 Strade Bianche Women Elite tells what happens out of the spotlight. The cameras usually follow the front of the peloton – the action, the surges, the breakaways – and we rarely get to see images from further down the road.
Still, what happens at the back of the peloton – below the waterline, if the bunch were an iceberg – is what gets the best ones right where they are.
Here is to all the domestiques out there – in praise of the unsung heroes and heroines of the peloton. They may stumble at times, as they toil selflessly for the benefit of others, but they’re back in the saddle straight away.
