Today saw a special naming ceremony of one sector of Strada Bianca (Monte Sante Marie in Asciano – click here for the exact location) dedicating it to Fabian Cancellara. The Swiss ace, who won the race three times and attended today’s ceremony, will have his name permanently engraved on a commemorative milestone erected in that sector. The spectacular international weekend of great cycling organised by RCS Sport / RCS Active Team / La Gazzetta dello Sport in the Terre di Siena will continue tomorrow with the Women’s and Men’s professional races, both part of the UCI WorldTour calendar, and on Sunday with the Gran Fondo.
Fabian Cancellara said: “It’s a great honour and a great pleasure for me to receive this recognition because this is a very important race. We’ve seen how fast it developed worldwide in the past few years. I’m proud to have won it three times. It’ll remain in the history of this beautiful event. For tomorrow I pick Sagan and Van Avermaet who have already showed in Belgium that they are very strong but I wouldn’t disregard Stybar and Felline either – I’ve seen them in good shape at the last races.”
